IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Koala
Character journal:
scrubscrub
Series name: One Piece
Canon notes: Koala is going to be coming from after she's taken by the Sun Pirates! But before she's returned to her home on Foolshout Island. Chapter 622 is her introduction chapter.
Species: Human.
History: Here! This covers her adult life currently in One Piece as well, but she'll be coming from much, much earlier. She doesn't have a huuuge history; the anime covers her story arc as a child in 2 episodes, and adds some additional information of her time aboard the Sun Pirate's ship as she grows to enjoy their company.
Personality:
On first meeting, Koala's strongest and most obvious personality traits are her determination and willpower. When we see her at the start of her story, at age 11, she shows a strong want to return to her mother -- who she had been stolen from a few years prior to be sold into slavery. We see her face what she believes to be terrifying non-human pirates because she wants to get back home, and the only way she has is by sailing with them. She also easily takes a hit to the face and cleans her blood without complaint, and is re-branded on her back and apologizes for passing out, swearing she didn't cry despite it. In order to keep moving, she finds a strength in herself that many may not possess.
It's because of that desire to survive and get through each day that she's developed a very odd and sometimes creepy nervous habit: she smiles. A lot. She attributes her getting through those painful years by sucking it up and playing the part, grinning and bearing it, swearing to never weep (likely because she had seen others do so and get punished and even killed for it). From the point she's pulled from, she has let herself cry once, thanks to Fisher Tiger and his (mildly horrible) kindness. But it's a nervous habit, a compulsion. She'll be doing it a lot, mmkay. On the positive side, the more she spends with the fishmen, the more her smile seems to lose the utterly fake and creepy look to it, settling for something more natural.
Koala's also very hardworking. She has a cleanliness about her born from her time working for others and making sure everything remained spotless, and because of this she even compulsively cleans when she gets nervous, much in the same way she keeps a smile plastered on her face; find her overwhelmed and she will get out a rag and start scrubbing the floors, the shelves, dusting, mopping. It's very much imprinted into her, so much so that she can be restless without it. As Aladdin the fishman had said -- you don't just get over these sorts of things overnight. With the obvious trauma, there's a fear of failing within her, a fear of not living up to standards for what is required of her. Because of this she makes sure to pull her weight, when and where she can. Even after Tiger's men treat her kindly she still is observed carrying heavy supplies on her back, eager to help. In this way, it's also a flaw and a problem: she's so used to lacking any agency in her life that when faced with making her own decisions... well, it's certainly not a thing she does a lot of thinking about. Aboard the fleet, she'll likely begin thinking she must occupy a role and serve it without question, because that's what she's supposed to do.
She'll get the memo eventually.
Koala can be a very timid and small child (small for an 11-year-old -- runty, but also lanky and short from her poor nutrition as a slave), and she's more likely to keep to herself and hold her tongue unless spoken to first; her time as a slave has hindered her ability to be as socially out-going as a normal child. This meekness shows when she's wearing clothes that are unbecoming of a slave, as she's anxiously pressing her hands together and staggering through a response. She is used to not being the receiver of gifts or new things like a clean, nice dress -- when she's out of her element and cannot find a way to openly please the people around her, it usually ends with this sort of uncertainty in the face of normal interaction. That said, she's incredibly polite and gentle in her ways, and even though she tries not to step on any toes, she's very honest. When asked by Jinbei the fishman why she feared them, she openly told him it was because humanity doesn't know anything about the fishmen, and that is where the fear begins.
Bottom line, she's a good kid -- she just has a lot to work on. She's far more stable than the mangy, grinning child passed over to Fisher Tiger's crew, and while she still has a ways to go, she can already be seen growing into her own person, and is even seen having gleeful enjoyment of snow and making small snowmen, like an ordinary girl. The personality given because of her harsh past is clear and she's always a work-in-progress, but they're what make her her, and she grows from it and away from it each and every day.
Abilities: CLEANING.
(... okay but yeah she's a normal human so you can imagine she has no fancy abilities outside of what is expected.)
Augment Skillset: Civilian - Maintenance.
Sample:
Ah -- I was asleep! I don't remember being tired; maybe I slept badly the night before.
[The higher pitch of a child's voice pops up on the broadcast; Koala herself is clearly a bit confused, a little troubled by her sudden lack of recollection over the last few hours. Last she remembers, she had... been on the deck of... Yes, she had been sailing with the Sun Pirates as usual, and Hatchan was teasing her by having her guess where something was in one of his many hands.
.... What is this, though?
She stares at the room around her, polished and not at all a pirate ship.
Her heart skips a beat. Her cheeks hurt a little, the corners of her mouth twisting.]
... Hello?
Did -- Did we dock?
[Did they leave her behind? Did Fisher Tiger grow tired of her? Perhaps he had realized he did not like her cry, the way she wailed so long ago. Maybe he resented it more than she realized. She's thankful for her life if that's the case, glad that she was not cut down for being a nuasance, but... but now... how will she get to her mother now?]
... Hatchan...? Mr. Tiger? Jinbei?
[The silence is very scary, but not the scariest she's faced. She plants her bare feet on the floor, curling her hands in her yellow dress. It's the only one she owns, and she's not sure she likes it even now, but they gave it to her and she expects to honor that. Her slave clothes were a bit torn anyway. She regrets not waking with shoes, but it's a nice floor. It's very clean, very much the place of richer families.
Is... Could she be... back in...
She shakes faintly at the thought.]
